A moody look at a troubled marriage in an unsettling and violent environment, the masoleum-like mansion of a family home in Lagos, Nigeria. As Nicole and her husband Tonye, newly immigrated from the UK, struggle to adjust to life in the new country, an atmospheric trail of foreboding follows their every move. Although able to find some small comfort within the community of Nigerwives, – women who, like Nicole, have traded in former lives to follow their husbands to Africa – there are clearly dark forces crowding into Nicole’s increasingly unhappy and now somewhat sinister world.

Told in two voices, that of Nicole in her ‘before’ world, as well as the POV of her aunt Claudine, visiting Lagos in the current day, the story follows events leading up to, as well as those following, Nicole’s sudden and mysterious disappearance.

Tense and claustrophobic, this character-based story is a winding and suspenseful read, with the final twist of an unexpected ending.

A great big thank you to the author and the publisher #simonschuster for an ARC of this book. All thoughts provided are my own.
